Why this page exists

LEP.gov, the federal language access website, offered free language identification cards, guidance and training for years. In July 2025 the Attorney General's memo implementing Executive Order 14224 suspended LEP.gov and other public language access materials pending review. The site now redirects to a Justice Department page that says the materials "will be replaced when new guidance is issued."

The need did not go away. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act and many state laws still apply, and the Justice Department's own 2025 rescission notice reminds recipients that denying language assistance can, under certain circumstances, be evidence of discrimination. The federal language access tracker follows what has and has not changed.

About the translations

Every card shows the language's name in its own script, so a person can recognize it at a glance, and the phrase "I speak" with the language, in that language. The line under it says the same thing in English for staff. Where a language has major variants, as with Armenian, Chinese, Hmong, Mixteco and Portuguese, there are separate cards for the main ones. Mixteco, Zapoteco and Triqui vary by town, so ask where the person is from before you book an interpreter.

Frequently asked

About I Speak cards

A language identification card. A person who does not speak English well points to their language, and staff arrange an interpreter in that language. It replaces guessing a language from a name or an accent.
