What is a "certified translation"?
A certified translation is one accompanied by a signed Certificate of Accuracy from the translator, attesting that the translation is a true and complete rendering of the source document. This is the U.S. standard for USCIS filings, court filings, and most academic and corporate use. The certificate names the translator, their credentials, and the date.
Is a certified translation the same as a notarized translation?
No. A notarized translation is a certified translation whose Certificate of Accuracy has been signed in the presence of a notary public. The notary verifies the identity of the signer, not the accuracy of the translation. Some courts and some foreign governments require notarization on top of certification.
Is AMS translation acceptable for USCIS?
Yes. USCIS requires certified translations of any foreign-language document submitted with an immigration filing. AMS provides USCIS-acceptable certified translations of birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, academic transcripts, and supporting documents. Translations include the certified translator statement that USCIS requires.
How long does a translation take?
Standard turnaround for a small certified document (one or two pages) is 2 to 4 business days. Same-day and next-day rush turnaround is available for an additional fee. Longer documents (50+ pages) take longer and we discuss the timeline at quote time.
What is an apostille and do I need one?
An apostille is an international authentication certificate issued by the Secretary of State, used to authenticate notarized documents for use in countries that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention. You need an apostille if the translated document is being submitted to a foreign government in a Hague country. For non-Hague countries, the longer consular-legalization chain applies. AMS coordinates the certified translation and notarization; the apostille itself is obtained from the Secretary of State.
Does AMS translate medical records and legal contracts?
Yes. Medical records, legal contracts, depositions, pleadings, expert reports, and corporate documents are routine translation work. We match each project to a translator with subject-matter experience in that area and run a second-translator review before delivery.
