What is the difference between a certified and a registered court interpreter?
Certified court interpreters have passed a state or federal court certification exam (which tests simultaneous, consecutive, and sight-translation skills) in a specific language pair. Registered interpreters work in languages where no certification exam exists; they are listed on a state-maintained registry after meeting training and experience requirements. Both are appropriate for court use. AMS supplies the highest level available for each language pair.
When does a proceeding require a team of two interpreters?
NAJIT (the National Association of Judicial Interpreters and Translators) recommends a team of two interpreters for any proceeding expected to run over an hour. Cognitive fatigue degrades accuracy past that threshold. A team works in 20 to 30 minute rotations and proofs each other on the record. Multi-day trials and long arbitrations almost always use a team.
Are AMS interpreters available for federal court?
Yes. AMS supplies FCICE-certified Spanish court interpreters for federal court matters, and federally-registered interpreters for other languages where federal certification is not available. We work in U.S. District Courts, U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, Immigration Court, and U.S. Courts of Appeal nationwide.
Can AMS interpret a deposition by video remote (Zoom, Teams, Webex)?
Yes. AMS supports remote depositions on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, GoToMeeting, and most other major platforms. For depositions over an hour, we still recommend a team of two interpreters. The remote format saves travel cost and time and is fully supported by most state and federal rules.

Does AMS handle indigenous-language interpretation (Mixtec, Triqui, Quiché, Mam)?
Yes. AMS routinely coordinates indigenous-language interpreters for U.S. legal proceedings, primarily via vetted video remote interpreting because in-language local interpreters are rare. Advance notice is important; the indigenous-language interpreter pool is small and books up quickly.
