Dari interpreters and translation services.
Dari is the Afghan form of Persian and, with Pashto, one of Afghanistan's two official languages under its 2004 Constitution. California has more Afghanistan-born residents than any other state, and Sacramento County has the most of any U.S. county, according to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey. AMS supplies Dari interpreters for depositions, attorney-client meetings, and IMEs, in person in the Sacramento region and remotely by Zoom or phone, plus Dari document translation. Dari is not one of California's certified court languages, so tell us about the proceeding and we will match a qualified interpreter.

Dari varieties and dialects we handle
Dari (Afghan Persian)
The Persian spoken in Afghanistan, written in the Perso-Arabic script from right to left. It is the language most Afghans share across ethnic lines.
Dari and Iranian Farsi
Closely related, with differences in pronunciation and vocabulary. For testimony, book an interpreter who works in the client's own variety rather than assuming a Farsi interpreter will do.
Hazaragi and other regional speech
Some Afghan clients speak regional varieties such as Hazaragi. Tell us where in Afghanistan the client is from so we can match the interpreter.
Pashto
Afghanistan's other official language. Many Afghan clients speak both Dari and Pashto, so confirm which is the client's first language before the proceeding.

Dari interpreting questions, answered
Does California certify Dari court interpreters?
No. Dari is not on the Judicial Council of California's list of certified spoken languages. The Judicial Council lists Dari among its registered languages, which have an oral proficiency exam in the language. AMS supplies qualified Dari interpreters; ask about a specific interpreter's credentials when you request a quote.
Is a Farsi interpreter the same as a Dari interpreter?
Not always. Dari and Iranian Farsi are closely related, but pronunciation and vocabulary differ, and those differences can matter in testimony. Tell us the client is Afghan and we will book a Dari interpreter.
Does AMS provide Dari interpreters for depositions?
Yes. Depositions are most of AMS's Dari work, along with attorney-client meetings and IMEs. We cover them in person in the Sacramento region and remotely by Zoom or phone anywhere in California.
Is there a federal court certification for Dari?
No. The federal courts' interpreter certification program covers Spanish; the programs for Navajo and Haitian Creole are no longer offered. Federal courts use professionally qualified or language-skilled interpreters for Dari.
Does AMS translate Dari documents?
Yes. AMS translates Dari documents for litigation, USCIS filings, and the courts, with the translator's certification statement those filings require.
