Japanese varieties and dialects we handle
Standard Japanese (Hyōjungo)
The standard variety based on Tokyo dialect. Used in virtually all U.S. legal and medical Japanese-language work.
Keigo (honorific registers)
Japanese has three distinct honorific levels (sonkeigo, kenjōgo, teineigo). Court and medical interpreters are trained to maintain the correct level for the speaker and the proceeding. This is more elaborate than honorifics in most other languages and matters substantially for accurate rendering of testimony.
Regional dialects (Kansai, Tōhoku, etc.)
Distinctive in informal speech but not in legal or medical settings, where speakers default to standard Japanese.
Japanese-American heritage variety
Second- and third-generation Japanese-Americans (Nisei, Sansei) may speak older-register Japanese or English-mixed Japanese. Court interpreters render this faithfully.
