Language Specialty

Japanese interpreters and translation services.

Japanese is a meaningful language across California, especially in Silicon Valley business contexts, the Japanese-American communities of LA and SF (Little Tokyo, Japantown), and the medical-tourism patient flows that include Japanese clients. AMS supplies Japanese interpreters trained in keigo (the elaborate honorific system) and the formal registers required for legal and medical proceedings.

Japanese varieties and dialects we handle

Standard Japanese (Hyōjungo)

The standard variety based on Tokyo dialect. Used in virtually all U.S. legal and medical Japanese-language work.

Keigo (honorific registers)

Japanese has three distinct honorific levels (sonkeigo, kenjōgo, teineigo). Court and medical interpreters are trained to maintain the correct level for the speaker and the proceeding. This is more elaborate than honorifics in most other languages and matters substantially for accurate rendering of testimony.

Regional dialects (Kansai, Tōhoku, etc.)

Distinctive in informal speech but not in legal or medical settings, where speakers default to standard Japanese.

Japanese-American heritage variety

Second- and third-generation Japanese-Americans (Nisei, Sansei) may speak older-register Japanese or English-mixed Japanese. Court interpreters render this faithfully.

Japanese interpreting questions, answered

Does California certify Japanese court interpreters?

The California Court Interpreter Program does not maintain a separate Japanese certification because Japanese is rare enough in California legal proceedings that a registered or qualified pathway is used. AMS supplies court-registered Japanese interpreters with documented training and experience for state court matters and federally-qualified interpreters for federal proceedings.

What is keigo and why does it matter in interpretation?

Keigo is the Japanese honorific system, with three primary levels: sonkeigo (respectful, elevating the listener), kenjōgo (humble, lowering the speaker), and teineigo (polite-neutral). The correct level on the record matters for accurate testimony rendering, especially with older witnesses or in formal legal settings. AMS interpreters are trained to maintain appropriate keigo.

How fast can AMS schedule a Japanese interpreter?

Availability depends on language, location, and timing. Call our office at (800) 919-2029 and we will confirm what is available for your date. The Japanese interpreter pool is smaller than Spanish or Mandarin, so advance notice (24 to 48 hours) is helpful for routine assignments. Same-day requests are handled but may require VRI rather than on-site.

Does AMS translate Japanese documents for USCIS and U.S. courts?

Yes. Japanese koseki (family register), birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and academic credentials are routinely translated for USCIS and U.S. court matters.

Can AMS supply Japanese business and conference interpreters?

Yes. Simultaneous and consecutive Japanese interpreters for trade shows, corporate meetings, M&A discussions, and conferences. The Silicon Valley tech sector generates regular Japanese business interpreting volume.

Does AMS handle Japanese medical interpreting?

Yes. Japanese medical interpreters for IMEs, hospital encounters, and telehealth, including the medical-tourism patient flow that includes Japanese clients seeking U.S. specialty care.
