Ukrainian interpreters and translation services.
Ukrainian is the state language of Ukraine under its Constitution. California has the second-largest Ukraine-born population of any state, after New York, and Sacramento County has the most of any California county, according to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey. AMS supplies Ukrainian interpreters for depositions and attorney-client meetings, in person in the Sacramento region and remotely by Zoom or phone, plus Ukrainian document translation. Ukrainian is not one of California's certified court languages, so tell us about the proceeding and we will match a qualified interpreter.

Ukrainian varieties and dialects we handle
Standard Ukrainian
Written in the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet, which has letters modern Russian does not use, such as і, ї, є, and ґ.
Ukrainian and Russian
Separate East Slavic languages. Many Ukrainians speak both, and some speak Surzhyk, an everyday mix of the two. Ask which language the witness is most comfortable testifying in.
Names in the record
Names often take different forms in Ukrainian and Russian, such as Oleksandr and Aleksandr. Send names as they appear on the witness's documents.

Ukrainian interpreting questions, answered
Does California certify Ukrainian court interpreters?
No. Ukrainian is not on the Judicial Council of California's list of certified spoken languages. The Judicial Council lists Ukrainian among its registered languages, which have an oral proficiency exam in the language. AMS supplies qualified Ukrainian interpreters; ask about a specific interpreter's credentials when you request a quote.
Can a Russian interpreter cover a Ukrainian speaker?
Do not assume so. Ukrainian and Russian are separate languages. Many Ukrainians also speak Russian, but testimony should be in the language the witness knows best. Tell us which one and we will book an interpreter in that language.
Does AMS provide Ukrainian interpreters for depositions?
Yes. Depositions are most of AMS's Ukrainian work, along with attorney-client meetings. We cover them in person in the Sacramento region and remotely by Zoom or phone anywhere in California.
Is there a federal court certification for Ukrainian?
No. The federal courts' interpreter certification program covers Spanish; the programs for Navajo and Haitian Creole are no longer offered. Federal courts use professionally qualified or language-skilled interpreters for Ukrainian.
Does AMS translate Ukrainian documents?
Yes. AMS translates Ukrainian documents for litigation, USCIS filings, and the courts, with the translator's certification statement those filings require.
