Tigrinya interpreters and translation services.
Tigrinya is spoken in Eritrea and in Ethiopia's Tigray region, has been one of Ethiopia's federal working languages since 2020, and is written in the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script. California has the second-largest Eritrea-born population of any state, according to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey. AMS supplies Tigrinya interpreters for depositions, IMEs, medical appointments, and attorney-client meetings, in person across the LA basin and Orange County and remotely by Zoom or phone. Tigrinya is not one of California's certified court languages, so tell us about the proceeding and we will match a qualified interpreter.

Tigrinya interpreting questions, answered
Does California certify Tigrinya court interpreters?
No. Tigrinya is not on the Judicial Council of California's list of certified spoken languages, and the Judicial Council treats every non-certified language as a registered language. AMS supplies qualified Tigrinya interpreters; ask about a specific interpreter's credentials when you request a quote.
Does it matter whether the client is Eritrean or Ethiopian?
Yes. Tigrinya dialects differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Tell us where the client is from and we will match the interpreter.
Does AMS provide Tigrinya interpreters for depositions and IMEs?
Yes. Depositions are most of AMS's Tigrinya work, along with IMEs and medical appointments, in person across the LA basin and Orange County and remotely by Zoom or phone.
Is there a federal court certification for Tigrinya?
No. The federal courts' interpreter certification program covers Spanish; the programs for Navajo and Haitian Creole are no longer offered. Federal courts use professionally qualified or language-skilled interpreters for Tigrinya.
