Indonesian interpreters and translation services.
Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is the state language of Indonesia under its Constitution and a standardized form of Malay. California has more Indonesia-born residents than any other state, and Los Angeles County has more than any other U.S. county, according to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey. AMS supplies Indonesian interpreters for medical-legal evaluations such as QMEs and IMEs, and for depositions, mostly in person in Los Angeles and San Diego, and remotely by Zoom or phone. Indonesian is not one of California's certified court languages, so tell us about the proceeding and we will match a qualified interpreter.

Indonesian varieties and dialects we handle
Standard Indonesian
Written in the Latin alphabet and used in government, schools, and the courts across Indonesia.
Indonesian and Malay
Indonesian is a standardized form of Malay. Indonesian and Malaysian Malay speakers largely understand each other in formal use, but vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation differ, especially in everyday speech, so book the client's own language.
Javanese, Sundanese, and other regional languages
About 7 in 10 Indonesians learned a regional language first. Nearly all can also speak Indonesian, though some older people are less comfortable in it, so tell us if the client's first language is a regional one.

Indonesian interpreting questions, answered
Does California certify Indonesian court interpreters?
No. Indonesian is not on the Judicial Council of California's list of certified spoken languages. The Judicial Council lists Indonesian among its registered languages, which have an oral proficiency exam in the language. AMS supplies qualified Indonesian interpreters; ask about a specific interpreter's credentials when you request a quote.
Does AMS provide Indonesian interpreters for QMEs and IMEs?
Yes. Medical-legal evaluations such as QMEs and IMEs are most of AMS's Indonesian work, along with depositions, mostly in person in Los Angeles and San Diego.
Can an Indonesian interpreter cover a Malay speaker?
Not always. The two are closely related and largely understandable in formal use, but vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation differ, especially in everyday speech. For testimony, tell us where the client is from and we will match the interpreter.
Is there a federal court certification for Indonesian?
No. The federal courts' interpreter certification program covers Spanish; the programs for Navajo and Haitian Creole are no longer offered. Federal courts use professionally qualified or language-skilled interpreters for Indonesian.
Does AMS translate Indonesian documents?
Yes. AMS translates Indonesian documents for litigation, USCIS filings, and the courts, with the translator's certification statement those filings require.
