Bengali interpreters and translation services.
Bengali, or Bangla, is the state language of Bangladesh under its Constitution and one of the 22 languages listed in India's Constitution, and the main official language of the Indian state of West Bengal. More Californians speak Bengali at home than residents of any other state except New York, according to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey. AMS supplies Bengali interpreters for depositions, IMEs, and trials, in person in Los Angeles and remotely by Zoom or phone. Bengali is not one of California's certified court languages, so tell us about the proceeding and we will match a qualified interpreter.

Bengali varieties and dialects we handle
Standard Bengali
Written left to right in the Bengali script. Speakers from Bangladesh and from India's West Bengal share a written standard, but their spoken Bengali differs in vocabulary and pronunciation.
Sylheti and Chittagonian
Spoken in northeastern and southeastern Bangladesh. They are often counted as separate languages, and speakers of standard Bengali can find them hard to follow. Tell us where in Bangladesh the client is from.
Bengali or Bangla
Two names for the same language: Bangla is its own name, Bengali the English one.

Bengali interpreting questions, answered
Does California certify Bengali court interpreters?
No. Bengali is not on the Judicial Council of California's list of certified spoken languages. The Judicial Council lists Bengali among its registered languages, which have an oral proficiency exam in the language. AMS supplies qualified Bengali interpreters; ask about a specific interpreter's credentials when you request a quote.
Can a Bengali interpreter cover a Sylheti speaker?
Not always. Sylheti is often treated as a separate language, and an interpreter who works only in standard Bengali may not follow it well. Tell us if the client speaks Sylheti or Chittagonian and we will match the interpreter.
Does AMS provide Bengali interpreters for depositions and IMEs?
Yes. Depositions are most of AMS's Bengali work, along with IMEs and trial testimony, in person in Los Angeles and remotely by Zoom or phone.
Is there a federal court certification for Bengali?
No. The federal courts' interpreter certification program covers Spanish; the programs for Navajo and Haitian Creole are no longer offered. Federal courts use professionally qualified or language-skilled interpreters for Bengali.
Does AMS translate Bengali documents?
Yes. AMS translates Bengali documents for litigation, USCIS filings, and the courts, with the translator's certification statement those filings require.
