Amharic interpreters and translation services.
Amharic is the working language of Ethiopia's federal government under the Ethiopian Constitution and is written in the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script. Las Vegas and Los Angeles each have a designated Little Ethiopia, and Clark County and Los Angeles County each have about 11,000 residents of Ethiopian ancestry, according to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey. AMS supplies Amharic interpreters for depositions, attorney-client meetings, and IMEs, in person in Las Vegas and Los Angeles and remotely by Zoom or phone. Amharic is not one of California's certified court languages, so tell us about the proceeding and we will match a qualified interpreter.

Amharic varieties and dialects we handle
Amharic
A Semitic language written left to right in the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script, where each character stands for a consonant and vowel together.
Tigrinya and Tigre
Related Semitic languages, but separate languages. Book the client's own language rather than assuming an Amharic interpreter will do.
Other Ethiopian languages
Since 2020, Oromo, Tigrinya, Somali, and Afar are also federal working languages in Ethiopia, and many Ethiopian clients' first language is not Amharic. Confirm the client's first language before booking.

Amharic interpreting questions, answered
Does California certify Amharic court interpreters?
No. Amharic is not on the Judicial Council of California's list of certified spoken languages, and the Judicial Council treats every non-certified language as a registered language. AMS supplies qualified Amharic interpreters; ask about a specific interpreter's credentials when you request a quote.
Can an Amharic interpreter cover a Tigrinya speaker?
Do not assume so. Amharic and Tigrinya are related Semitic languages but they are separate languages. Tell us the client's first language and we will book an interpreter in that language.
Does AMS provide Amharic interpreters for depositions?
Yes. Depositions are most of AMS's Amharic work, along with attorney-client meetings and IMEs. We cover them in person in Las Vegas and Los Angeles and remotely by Zoom or phone.
Is there a federal court certification for Amharic?
No. The federal courts' interpreter certification program covers Spanish; the programs for Navajo and Haitian Creole are no longer offered. Federal courts use professionally qualified or language-skilled interpreters for Amharic.
