Medical Interpreting Specialty

Interpreters for psychological and neuropsychological evaluations.

Psychological and neuropsychological evaluations are longer (3 to 6 hours typical), more nuanced, and more cognitively demanding than most medical encounters. The interpreter must render not only the substantive content but also affect, hesitation, and qualifying language that matter for the clinical assessment. AMS supplies interpreters specifically trained for the psych and neuropsych format, with continuity across follow-up sessions when scheduling permits.

What we handle

Psychological IMEs (workers-comp, PI defense, plaintiff)

Forensic psychological evaluations in personal injury, workers-comp, and disability cases. Interpreters experienced with the IME report flow and the cadence of forensic psych testing.

Neuropsychological evaluations

Cognitive testing batteries (Wechsler, MMPI, TOMM, etc.) with linguistic adjustment. Some tests have language-specific equivalent versions; AMS coordinates these where available.

AME and QME psychological evaluations

Workers-comp Agreed and Qualified Medical Evaluations in the psychological specialty. Interpreters experienced with the AME/QME procedural format.

Sanity / competency evaluations

Criminal defense and prosecution-side competency evaluations. Interpreters with documented criminal-defense or forensic experience.

Child custody (730) evaluations

California Evidence Code 730 custody evaluations involving non-English-speaking parents. Multi-session work with continuity preferred.

Routine clinical psych and psychiatry

Outpatient psychotherapy sessions, psychiatric consultations, and ongoing clinical care. Interpreters available for long-term cases with continuity.

Translated psychological testing protocols

Where validated translated versions of standard tests are available, AMS sources them. Where they are not, we coordinate with the clinician on testing approach.

How it works

  1. 01

    Send the evaluation details

Date, expected duration, language, type of evaluation (IME, AME, QME, clinical, custody, competency), and the evaluator's name.

  2. 02

    We match a psych-experienced interpreter

Selection by language pair, prior psych or neuropsych experience, and availability for the full duration plus follow-ups.

  3. 03

    Pre-session coordination

Pre-share any documents the interpreter should review (intake, prior records). Confirm logistics including breaks.

Why psychiatrists, psychologists, and IME companies choose AMS

Long-format reliability

Psych evaluations run 3 to 6 hours. AMS interpreters are available for the full duration without rushed transitions or substitutions mid-session.

Affect and qualification rendering

Interpreters trained to render not just substance but hesitation, qualifying language, and emotional affect that matter for the clinical record.

Continuity across follow-ups

Many evaluations involve a follow-up session days or weeks later. Same interpreter continuity reduces ramp-up and preserves rapport.

Psychological evaluation interpreter questions, answered

How long do psychological evaluations typically run?

Standard psychological IMEs run 2 to 4 hours. Neuropsychological evaluations typically run 4 to 8 hours, sometimes split across two days. Custody (730) evaluations often involve 2 to 3 sessions of 2 to 4 hours each. AMS interpreters are booked for the full expected duration.

Can a psychological evaluation use VRI instead of on-site interpretation?

Sometimes, depending on the evaluator and the specific tests. Cognitive testing batteries are typically better in-person. Talk therapy and history-taking can work via VRI. The evaluator usually has a preference; AMS accommodates either.

Does AMS handle indigenous-language psychological evaluations?

Yes. Mixtec, Triqui, Mam, Quiché-speaking applicants are common in workers-comp and immigration psych evaluations. AMS coordinates qualified indigenous-language interpreters with advance notice.

Can the same interpreter handle prep, evaluation, and any follow-up?

Yes when scheduling permits. Continuity reduces rapport-building time and improves test reliability.

Are AMS interpreters bound by confidentiality and HIPAA?

Yes. All AMS interpreters work under written confidentiality agreements covering protected health information. Psychiatric and psychological records are treated with the same HIPAA-aware practice as any medical encounter.

What languages does AMS handle for psychological evaluations?

All major languages including Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Armenian, Farsi, Tagalog, Russian, Arabic, ASL, and indigenous languages. Rare-language psych evaluations are coordinated with advance notice.
